Carney Government Restores Refugee Health Coverage After Cutting Interim Federal Health Program

The Carney government has moved to restore health coverage for refugees after earlier cuts to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). The change reverses policies that had required refugee claimants and resettled refugees to pay out-of-pocket for parts of prescription and supplemental care. Advocates had warned the co-payments would delay treatment for people already facing poverty, trauma, and barriers to accessing regular provincial health coverage. The restoration is expected to improve access to medications and services while reducing administrative and financial pressure on families.
