Naperville, United States— A carjacking outside a two-story home in the Cress Creek subdivision at 6:40 p.m. Monday escalated into a fatal assault when the vehicle owner confronted two armed suspects and was beaten and shot.
Police said the victim, a 41-year-old man, had just parked his black Range Rover in the driveway and was unloading groceries. Two males wearing hoodies approached on foot, one with a pistol. They demanded keys. The victim refused and grappled with one suspect. The second suspect struck him with the gun, then fired once at close range.
The suspects fled in the Range Rover, leaving the victim bleeding on the driveway. His wife called 911 from inside. Paramedics transported him to Edward Hospital where he died during surgery. The stolen SUV was found abandoned four miles away with its doors open.
"He yelled no. Then a bang. I saw two people run and drive off fast. We ran out to help," said a neighbor across the street who heard the shot and called police. He said the subdivision rarely sees violent crime.
Naperville Police deployed K-9 units and a police helicopter. Detectives collected doorbell camera footage from three homes showing the suspects loitering 10 minutes before the attack. The footage shows one suspect checking car door handles.
"This was targeted for the vehicle, not the person. Resistance turned it deadly. We advise never to fight over property," Sgt. Amy Miller said at a press briefing Tuesday morning.
Carjackings have surged in Chicago suburbs this year, often involving high-end SUVs. Many are linked to crews from the city who resell vehicles or use them for other crimes.
The victim’s family requested privacy. A GoFundMe for funeral costs raised $20,000 overnight. The neighborhood association hired private patrols.
Police are analyzing forensic evidence from the abandoned Range Rover and expect to release suspect stills by Wednesday. The case has been classified as felony murder.
The investigation remains active and officers are asking for any additional video from drivers who passed through between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m.
