YENAGOA, Nigeria — The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested six university students following a vicious, cult-related assault that left a fellow student severely brutalized. The swift crackdown by law enforcement highlights the ongoing battle against rampant cultism within tertiary institutions across the region.

The arrests were made following an emergency deployment of tactical teams to the university’s surrounding community, where the violent initiation and retaliatory attack took place.

According to official police reports, the suspects—all confirmed undergraduates of a prominent university in Bayelsa State—conspired to launch a coordinated attack on a colleague. The victim, whose identity has been protected for security reasons, was cornered by the gang in a secluded off-campus residential area popular with students.

Witnesses stated that the suspects, acting under the influence of rival cult group rivalries, subjected the victim to a horrific ordeal. He was severely beaten with planks, iron rods, and other dangerous weapons, leaving him with deep lacerations and multiple fractures. The attackers reportedly filmed portions of the brutalization to intimidate other students before fleeing the scene when neighbors raised the alarm.

The victim was rushed by emergency responders to a nearby tertiary health facility, where he is currently undergoing intensive medical treatment for severe head and bodily injuries.

Following a distress call and intelligence gathered from terrified student eyewitnesses, the State Anti-Cultism Unit launched a synchronized raid on suspected hideouts in the Yenagoa metropolis and campus outskirts. The operation led to the immediate apprehension of six primary suspects.

During the targeted arrests, police recovered several incriminating items, including regalia and insignia belonging to a notorious banned confraternity. Additionally, officers seized a locally fabricated pistol with live ammunition, alongside various sharp objects, such as axes and machetes, believed to have been used in the violent assault.

The Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the arrests, stating that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects had been terrorizing the student community for months through extortion, forced initiations, and violent intimidation.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the university community, prompting school authorities to issue a stern warning regarding campus safety. Cultism remains a severe criminal offense under Nigerian law, carrying heavy prison sentences for convicted student offenders.

"The Command will not fold its arms and watch young Nigerians destroy their futures and the peace of our academic institutions," the police spokesperson declared. "We are working closely with university management to flush out these criminal elements."
