Building Memory in the Machine: Elon Musk’s Grokipedia Debut

In the soft glow of a screen, knowledge flickers and shifts—and in that moment, Elon Musk chose to press “Enter.” He unveiled Grokipedia, an AI-powered online encyclopedia, a rival to the venerable Wikipedia, promising to “purge out the propaganda” and deliver the truth in a new form.

It was not just a launch—it was a proclamation. With Grokipedia’s homepage listing around 880 000 to 900 000 articles in its initial version, Musk declared that the project was already “10x better” than Wikipedia, though still in its 0.1 phase. The minimalist interface—search bar, black background, the clean simplicity of something new—belied the weight of the ambition behind it.

For years, Musk had taken aim at Wikipedia. He claimed it was biased, dominated by what he considered left-leaning narratives, and urged his millions of followers to rethink donated support. With Grokipedia, he sought to place himself at the helm of an alternate archive of human knowledge—one curated not by volunteers but by machine intelligence: the AI model Grok from his company xAI.
