Johannesburg, South Africa— Three construction workers died after a building structure collapsed at a construction site in Johannesburg on November 1, 2026, trapping them under concrete and steel scaffolding.
The collapse happened around 11 a.m. in a northern suburb where a multi-story commercial building was under construction. Workers were pouring concrete on the second floor when a section of formwork gave way. The slab fell, taking scaffolding and workers with it.
Emergency Medical Services and Johannesburg Emergency Management arrived within 20 minutes. They found a pile of rubble, twisted rebar and broken timber. Three men were dead under the debris. Two others were pulled out alive with broken legs and taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
"The structure collapsed suddenly. Workers had no time to escape. We had to use heavy equipment to lift the concrete," a rescue official said at the site. He said search dogs were brought in to check for additional trapped workers. No one else was found.
Construction site collapses remain common in South Africa. Inspectors cite poor scaffolding, inadequate shoring, and rushed timelines. Unions have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations. This site had been inspected two weeks ago, according to preliminary records.
The Department of Employment and Labour said it will open a formal inquiry. Inspectors sealed off the site and seized safety files, including risk assessments and engineer sign-offs. The developer's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Workers at the site said they had raised concerns about wobbling formwork earlier in the week. One worker, who asked not to be named, said concrete was poured faster than usual to meet a deadline. That claim has not been verified.
Family members gathered outside the cordon. One woman said her husband, a father of two, had worked at the site for three months. She said he called home that morning. No one from the company spoke to families by mid-afternoon.
Johannesburg's building boom has strained inspection capacity. Municipal officials said they will review approvals for similar projects in the district. The site will remain closed until structural engineers declare it safe.
The investigation will focus on formwork design, load calculations and supervision. Officials said charges are possible if negligence is found.
