Both parties now say the same thing, and voters will decide if it is true.

BC's NDP and Conservatives both promised to extend SkyTrain to Newton within days of each other, aligning with Surrey mayor-elect Doug McCallum's plan ahead of the October 24 election.

Both parties now say the same thing, and voters will decide if it is true.

There is a particular choreography in the final days of an election, when parties that disagree on much suddenly find themselves dancing to the same song. In British Columbia, with voting day less than a week away, the New Democrats and the Conservatives issued competing news releases within minutes of each other, both promising the same thing: a SkyTrain extension to Newton, the Surrey neighbourhood that has waited years for rapid transit while other corridors received their tracks .

The alignment is striking not because the parties agree but because they have chosen the same ground on which to compete. NDP Leader David Eby said he has worked with Surrey mayor-elect Doug McCallum to bring SkyTrain to Langley and is committed to partnering again for the spur to Newton . Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson announced that his government would work with the federal government to fund and build the connection along King George Boulevard, framing Newton as a community that has been "left at the back of the line" for years .

The history beneath this promise is layered. In 2018, the previous street-level Surrey Newton-Guildford light rail transit project was cancelled by McCallum's Safe Surrey Coalition in its first meeting after taking office. The council instead pursued a SkyTrain extension along Fraser Highway from King George Station to Langley City Centre, which is now under construction for completion in 2029 . Newton, in this telling, was promised its turn. Eight years later, that turn has not arrived .

What the parties are now proposing would likely cancel TransLink's existing, less ambitious plan for a King George Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit line, a project estimated at about $700 million and one that the BC NDP had included $250 million for in its platform . A SkyTrain spur to Newton would be a larger commitment, both in cost and in permanence, and its alignment with McCallum's civic election promise gives it a political momentum that the BRT plan lacked.

There is a quiet irony in the timing. McCallum, who returned to the mayor's office in this election, had previously championed the SkyTrain to Langley while cancelling the LRT to Newton. Now both provincial parties are promising to complete the loop he helped redraw, and each is framing the other as the obstacle. The Conservatives point to the NDP's nine years of announcements and cost overruns . The NDP point to their work with McCallum on the Langley line and their commitment to partner again .

For the residents of Newton, the politics matter less than the construction. What they have been offered, across eight years and multiple elections, is a promise that their turn will come. What they have received is a bus route and a plan for a better bus route. Whether this election changes that depends on who wins on October 24, and whether the winning party remembers the press release after the ballots are counted.

There is no guarantee in any of this, only the familiar rhythm of a campaign finding its closing argument. Two parties, one promise, and a neighbourhood waiting to see whether the track this time leads somewhere.
