At the heart of the discussion were stark numbers: 19 proposed data centres in Melbourne’s western suburbs could collectively consume up to 20 gigalitres of water annually — roughly equivalent to the annual use of 330,000 residents. These facilities also carry the potential to significantly increase energy demand in coming decades, raising questions about renewable energy use and responsible urban planning.

While the data centre boom promises economic opportunity and technological growth, councillors and the Lord Mayor emphasize the need for foresight and ecological responsibility. By balancing ambition with sustainability, Melbourne aims to remain a city where digital innovation and environmental stewardship coexist.

State and federal governments are now urged to work with the city to develop frameworks that ensure water, energy, and emissions impacts are managed effectively, allowing Melbourne’s growth to remain both progressive and conscientious.
