Two commercial ships were hit by drone strikes off the coast of Bulgaria in the Black Sea, sinking one cargo vessel and damaging another, triggering emergency naval rescues.SOFIA, Bulgaria — Two commercial cargo vessels were targeted by unmanned explosive drones in international waters off the Bulgarian coast in the Black Sea early on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026, resulting in the sinking of one ship and causing severe damage to another.
The attack marks a dramatic escalation in maritime security risks along crucial grain and shipping corridors in the western Black Sea.
According to the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense and maritime safety authorities, the Palau-flagged bulk carrier M/V Sea Ranger, carrying a crew of 14, was struck by an airborne kamikaze drone approximately 35 nautical miles east of the port of Varna. The explosion tore a major breach into the vessel’s hull near the engine room, taking on water rapidly.
Despite emergency efforts by the crew to pump out water, the captain issued a distress signal and ordered the crew to abandon ship. The vessel sank within two hours of the strike. The Bulgarian Navy, working alongside coastal search and rescue vessels, successfully rescued all 14 crew members from lifeboats and transported them to Varna for medical evaluation.
Simultaneously, a second drone struck the Panama-flagged container ship M/V Ocean Pioneer roughly 12 nautical miles from the first incident. The strike ignited a fire on the upper deck and damaged navigational equipment, but the crew managed to contain the blaze and maintain propulsion, allowing the vessel to head under escort toward safe anchorage near Burgas. Three crew members sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the explosion.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev convened an emergency national security meeting in Sofia following the incidents, condemning the strikes as a direct threat to international maritime navigation and regional safety.
Maritime authorities have issued urgent navigation warnings for merchant shipping in the western Black Sea, while naval patrols and aerial surveillance have been intensified around Bulgaria's Exclusive Economic Zone to secure shipping lanes and search for any remaining floating hazards. NATO maritime assets in the region have also increased monitoring activities as international naval experts begin investigating the origin and control systems of the drones used in the assault.
