The lawmakers argue that allowing Putin to attend would legitimize Russia’s government while its war against Ukraine continues. Their letter cites attacks on Ukrainian civilians, U.S. sanctions against Putin and other delegates, and concerns that diplomatic access could weaken pressure for a ceasefire. The invitation was announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Putin’s attendance remains uncertain today.
