Beyond the One-Gigawatt Horizon: Ecoener Expands Its Renewable Footprint as Solar Generation Reaches New Heights

Renewable energy projects often begin as lines on a map: a field, a transmission route, a possible connection to the grid. Over time, those lines become panels, cables and generating facilities spread across different landscapes.

Spanish renewable-energy company Ecoener has now crossed a significant point in that process. The Galicia-based company said on September 29 that its assets in operation and under construction had reached 1,015 megawatts, taking its portfolio beyond the one-gigawatt mark.

The milestone came as Ecoener reported its financial results for the first half of 2026. Revenue increased 29% year over year to €54.2 million, while EBITDA rose 53% to €29.9 million.

Electricity generation also reached a record. Ecoener produced 612 gigawatt-hours during the first six months of the year, a 51% increase from the same period in 2025. The company attributed much of the growth to newly operational solar facilities.

Seven photovoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 253 MW entered commercial operation between late 2025 and early 2026 in the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Guatemala. Those projects helped raise Ecoener’s operating capacity to 680 MW.

The company’s expansion is increasingly international. Revenue generated outside Spain reached €43.1 million, accounting for 79% of total revenue during the first half. The figures underline how much of Ecoener’s recent growth has come from projects beyond its home market.

Long-term contracts are another part of the company’s structure. Ecoener reported that 87% of its energy sales were covered by power-purchase agreements or regulated mechanisms, providing a degree of visibility over future electricity revenues.

The one-gigawatt milestone includes projects still being built, not only facilities already producing electricity. Ecoener recently began construction on two 200 MW photovoltaic plants in Guatemala. Both projects are backed by long-term power-purchase agreements and are planned to include battery-storage systems.

The company’s financial picture is not entirely defined by its stronger operating figures. Net profit declined to roughly €3 million during the first half, with financial expenses and foreign-exchange effects weighing on the bottom line.

Ecoener said it plans to add another 500 MW over the next two years. If those plans progress as expected, operating capacity could reach around 1.2 GW by 2028, adding another layer to the company’s international expansion.

For Spain’s renewable-energy sector, Ecoener’s development reflects a broader movement in which companies are increasingly building portfolios across multiple countries. Solar plants may be rooted in individual landscapes, but the businesses behind them increasingly operate across borders, financing projects and managing generation in several energy markets at once.

The one-gigawatt threshold is therefore less a finishing line than a marker along a much longer road. Ecoener has expanded from its Spanish base into Latin American markets, increased its operating generation and added projects under construction. The next measure will be how efficiently those assets translate into electricity, revenue and sustainable growth as the portfolio continues to expand.
