Between Rates and Inflation, the Dollar Moves Through a Restless September of Global Market Expectations

The currency market often moves quietly, almost like a tide changing direction before the shoreline reveals what has shifted. In early September, the U.S. dollar is moving through one of those moments, surrounded by changing expectations about interest rates, inflation and the direction of the global economy.

The dollar struggled to gain much ground on Monday despite growing expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in September. Markets placed the probability of a rate increase at about 57%, reflecting a noticeable change in expectations following recent economic data.

The shift was partly supported by stronger U.S. employment data released at the end of last week. A healthier labor market can give policymakers greater room to maintain or increase borrowing costs, while investors adjust their positions according to the possibility of higher rates.

Normally, higher U.S. interest rates can provide support for the dollar because they can make dollar-denominated assets more attractive. Yet the latest movement has been restrained. Investors are also watching inflation pressures outside the United States, particularly as energy costs create additional uncertainty for economies around the world.

The Japanese yen was trading around 156.01 per dollar on Monday, while the euro and British pound remained relatively steady. The movements suggested that currency markets were still searching for a clearer direction rather than committing fully to one side of the dollar trade.

The broader picture is increasingly interconnected. If energy prices remain elevated, inflation could become a concern for several major economies at the same time. That could encourage other central banks to maintain tighter monetary conditions, limiting the advantage that the dollar might otherwise receive from stronger U.S. rate expectations.

Attention is therefore turning toward upcoming U.S. inflation data. Consumer and producer price figures are expected to provide markets with another indication of whether price pressures are continuing to ease or beginning to strengthen again. Those numbers could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's next decision.

Financial markets have already begun responding to the changing outlook. Higher rate expectations have influenced bond yields and precious metals, while investors continue to monitor equity markets and digital assets for signs of changing risk appetite. Bitcoin remained near the $80,000 level during Monday's trading.

For the dollar, September is therefore beginning without a decisive breakthrough. The currency has support from changing interest-rate expectations, but that support is being balanced by broader inflation concerns and movements in other major currencies. As more economic data arrive, markets will continue looking for small signals that could reveal the larger direction ahead.
