Chicago, United States— Two workers were killed early Saturday when the roof of a large industrial warehouse on Chicago's South Side collapsed without warning during operations.
The failure happened just after 7:30 a.m. local time inside a distribution facility near the 7900 block of South Chicago Avenue. Crews inside were starting the morning shift. The roof came down in one section, roughly 15,000 square feet of steel decking and support beams. It trapped workers under debris before anyone could get out.
Chicago Fire Department pulled two bodies from the wreckage after a three-hour search. Two other workers were treated for minor injuries. The department's deputy chief said the collapse was a full structural failure, not a partial cave-in. Heavy equipment was needed to lift concrete and twisted metal.
The building is owned by a logistics operator that leases space to three tenants. Records from the city's Department of Buildings show the structure was built in 1978 and last inspected in late 2024. That inspection flagged minor roofing issues but did not order a shutdown. Investigators now want the full file.
"This was a working warehouse, full of product and forklifts moving," one first responder at the scene said. "When that roof dropped, there was no time." The comment captured the speed of the event. Workers nearby described a loud crack, then dust.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed it has opened an investigation. OSHA officials were on site by noon to interview managers and workers. The agency said it will examine maintenance logs, load-bearing calculations, and whether recent heavy rainfall compromised the roof membrane.
The company operating the warehouse issued a short statement. "We are devastated by the loss of two members of our team and are cooperating fully with authorities," it said. The firm declined to answer questions about prior complaints.
Neighboring businesses were ordered to shelter until engineers cleared adjacent structures. The collapse sent a ripple through the industrial corridor. Truck traffic was rerouted for blocks. Power was cut as a precaution.
City engineers have cordoned off the site as unsafe. The investigation is now focused on structural integrity, not rescue.
