Between Markets and Borders, Cambodia and China See Trade Rise as Regional Commerce Finds New Momentum

The rhythm of commerce between Cambodia and China has quickened through the first eight months of 2026, with bilateral trade reaching $15.53 billion. The figure represents a 22.3 percent increase from the same period a year earlier, according to Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce.

Behind the headline number lies a familiar but changing pattern. Cambodia exported about $1.3 billion worth of goods to China, an increase of 23.4 percent year on year, while imports from China reached $14.2 billion, rising 22 percent.

The flow moves in both directions, although the balance remains heavily weighted toward imports. Cambodian shipments to China include rice, bananas, cassava, rubber and fresh longan, while imports include textiles, steel, vehicles and spare parts.

The wider trade landscape has also been expanding. Cambodia recorded more than $50 billion in total international trade during the first eight months of 2026, with China accounting for nearly 30 percent of the country’s overall trade volume.

For businesses, the movement of goods is increasingly shaped by formal regional frameworks. The Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership have provided channels through which companies can reach markets, arrange supply chains and manage cross-border commerce.

There is also a gradual shift in the character of Cambodia’s ambitions. Beyond traditional garments, the country has been seeking greater investment in electronics, automotive assembly, clean energy, agro-processing and logistics. These sectors require not only capital, but also infrastructure, technology and a workforce able to support more sophisticated production.

The latest trade figures therefore sit within a larger economic movement. Cambodia is attempting to connect its agricultural base and manufacturing sector more closely with regional production networks, while encouraging investment that can create higher-value activity inside the country.

Yet the numbers also show the scale of the relationship’s imbalance. With imports from China far exceeding Cambodian exports, the next stage of trade development will partly depend on whether Cambodian producers can continue expanding their presence in the Chinese market.

For now, the flow continues to grow. Through ports, factories, farms and warehouses, the relationship is being measured not only in billions of dollars but in the steady movement of products across borders. The first eight months of 2026 suggest that this commercial current remains an important part of Cambodia’s regional economy.
