* Between Los Angeles Lights and Jakarta Dreams, Indonesian Creativity Seeks New Pathways Across the Pacific Through Shared Stories

On October 10, 2026, ANTARA News reported that the Indonesian government had discussed possible cooperation agreements with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, an organization representing more than 600 members across the entertainment industry. The discussions took place during the fourth Indonesia–US Digital Technology Forum: Creative Economy, held in Los Angeles from October 5 to 8.

The Indonesian delegation was led by Grata Endah Werdaningtyas, director general for American and European affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Participants included Ron Frierson, president and chief executive of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Their meeting brought representatives from Indonesia and the American entertainment sector into a conversation about possible areas of cooperation.

The discussions reflect a wider effort to connect Indonesia’s creative economy with international markets. Film, television, digital media, animation, and other creative industries increasingly operate across national boundaries. Production may take place in one country, postproduction in another, and distribution across several continents. For creators, such networks can open new professional opportunities while introducing audiences to stories they might otherwise never encounter.

However, international cooperation involves more than bringing creative professionals into the same room. Agreements must eventually translate into practical arrangements involving investment, production capabilities, intellectual property, distribution, and access to markets. For Indonesian businesses, the value of a partnership will depend on whether it helps creators develop projects, reach audiences, and sustain their work commercially.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce offers a potential point of contact with a broad entertainment network. Yet the discussions should be understood as an exploration of cooperation rather than evidence that specific film projects, production contracts, or investments have already been secured. The next steps will determine whether the initial conversations develop into formal agreements and measurable business activity.

Indonesia’s creative sector has a range of material that could attract international interest, from contemporary urban stories to folklore, animation, music, fashion, and regional cultural traditions. Turning that variety into internationally successful work requires strong writing, professional production, effective marketing, and an understanding of audiences in different markets. Partnerships may provide access to expertise, but the creative identity of the work remains an important part of its appeal.

There is also an economic dimension beyond the screen. Successful creative projects can support employment for writers, performers, technicians, designers, editors, and production crews. They may also generate work for small businesses that provide equipment, transportation, accommodation, and other services. When intellectual property is managed effectively, a story can extend into multiple formats and create opportunities that continue long after an initial release.

The Los Angeles forum therefore represents an early step in a broader conversation about how Indonesian creativity can participate in the international entertainment economy. The government and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce have discussed potential cooperation, but the practical outcome will depend on the agreements, projects, and commercial relationships that follow.
