Singapore is a small island where even the invisible world of data has to negotiate with the physical limits of land and electricity. Beneath the movement of cloud services and artificial intelligence systems, another infrastructure is quietly taking shape. Four data center operators have now received approval to expand capacity by a combined 200 megawatts.

Digital Realty, Equinix, Keppel Data Centres and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres each received an allocation of 50 megawatts. Their proposals were selected through a competitive process involving more than 16 applications submitted to Singapore's Economic Development Board and Infocomm Media Development Authority.

The decision reflects the growing appetite for computing power. Artificial intelligence applications require substantial amounts of processing capacity, and companies increasingly depend on data centers to handle cloud services, machine learning systems and other digital workloads. Singapore has positioned itself as a regional technology and connectivity hub, making additional capacity increasingly important.

But expansion comes with conditions. The four operators have committed to obtaining more than half of the electricity for their new capacity from green energy sources. The requirements include options such as biomethane, low-carbon ammonia, low-carbon hydrogen and building-integrated photovoltaics.

The facilities are also expected to adopt liquid cooling and energy-efficient information technology equipment. These measures reflect a practical reality of modern computing: as machines become more powerful, the infrastructure needed to keep them operating also becomes more demanding.

Singapore's geography makes that balance especially visible. The country has limited land and energy resources, and authorities imposed a data center moratorium in 2019 partly because of those constraints. The moratorium was later lifted as the government developed a more selective approach to allocating new capacity.

The latest allocation also extends an earlier program. In the first Data Centre Call for Application, launched in 2022, authorities awarded 80MW of new capacity to four operators. The latest 200MW allocation is therefore a significant expansion, but it is being introduced under tighter sustainability and efficiency requirements.

Individual companies are continuing to expand their Singapore footprints. Equinix operates five data centers and is preparing a sixth facility, while ST Telemedia Global Data Centres operates six and plans another on Jurong Island. Digital Realty currently operates three facilities with a combined capacity of 84MW and will establish another site.

The development also reaches beyond individual buildings. JTC is developing a low-carbon data center park on Jurong Island, while authorities said another application round could be considered within the next two years depending on Singapore's strategic needs.

For Singapore, the latest decision illustrates the delicate relationship between digital ambition and physical resources. As AI and cloud computing continue to expand, the country is adding capacity while requiring new infrastructure to carry a greater share of its energy needs through lower-carbon sources.
