Between Algorithms and Human Judgment, Accenture Sees Businesses Seeking Guidance Through Another Technology Transformation Ahead

Accenture's latest outlook offers a glimpse into that transformation. The consulting and technology-services company expects fiscal 2027 revenue growth of between 3% and 6%, above the average analyst expectation. The forecast helped reassure investors who had questioned whether artificial intelligence could eventually weaken demand for traditional technology services.

Investors responded strongly. Accenture shares rose 22% following the announcement, marking the company's strongest daily performance. Shares of several other technology-services companies also moved higher as investors considered the possibility that AI could create new consulting demand rather than simply eliminate existing services.

The distinction is important. Artificial intelligence can automate certain tasks, but businesses still have to determine where that automation belongs. Companies need systems to be integrated with existing operations, data to be protected, employees to be trained and new technologies to be evaluated. Those decisions require expertise that does not disappear simply because the technology becomes more capable.

Accenture's quarterly figures reflected continued demand. Fourth-quarter bookings increased 4% to $22.17 billion, while consulting revenue rose 7% to $9.28 billion. Total revenue reached $18.68 billion, above analyst expectations. The figures suggested that companies were continuing to invest in technology even while demanding clearer financial benefits from those investments.

But artificial intelligence is also changing the economics of consulting. Accenture has acknowledged pricing pressure in some areas as clients seek to capture part of the savings generated by AI. The technology can therefore create additional demand while simultaneously encouraging customers to expect greater efficiency from their technology providers.

The company plans to invest roughly $5 billion in acquisitions during fiscal 2027. The strategy follows a series of investments designed to strengthen capabilities in areas such as cybersecurity and emerging technologies. Rather than betting on one narrow interpretation of AI, the company is expanding the range of services it can offer as businesses adapt.

Accenture has also become involved in AI evaluation and safety. Its partnership with Anthropic to independently evaluate frontier AI models reflects the growing importance of testing and reliability as increasingly capable systems enter commercial environments. The AI economy is consequently expanding beyond model development into implementation, assessment and governance.

For consulting companies, the central challenge may therefore be finding a place between automation and human judgment. Artificial intelligence can accelerate certain forms of work, but organizations still need people who understand how technology interacts with strategy, customers, employees and existing infrastructure.

That balance is likely to remain important as the technology develops. Accenture's forecast does not settle the larger question of how AI will reshape consulting, but it provides one indication of the direction businesses are taking: rather than simply stepping away from technology advisers, many companies are seeking more help in understanding how to use a rapidly changing technological landscape.
