Beneath Patagonia's Open Sky, YPF Expands Its Investment Horizon as Vaca Muerta's Production Continues Rising

The Patagonian landscape rarely gives away its scale at first glance. Beyond the roads and industrial sites, the horizon remains wide and quiet, while beneath the surface an increasingly important part of Argentina’s energy industry continues to develop.

YPF has raised its projected investment for 2026 to $6.2 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $5.8 billion. The company also increased its annual EBITDA forecast to approximately $8 billion from a previous projection of $6 billion.

The revised outlook reflects several forces moving at the same time. Stronger oil prices have supported YPF’s expectations, while growing shale production and operational improvements have helped strengthen the company’s financial position.

At the center of this expansion is Vaca Muerta, whose shale resources have become increasingly important to Argentina’s oil and gas industry. YPF is one of the principal operators in the formation, where advances in drilling and production have helped increase output and improve the commercial potential of unconventional resources.

The company’s second-quarter performance provided a clearer picture of that momentum. YPF reported net profit of $1.21 billion, compared with $58 million during the same quarter of the previous year. Revenue increased to $6.57 billion, while adjusted EBITDA reached $2.80 billion, according to Reuters.

Shale oil production averaged about 213,000 barrels per day during the quarter, representing a substantial increase from the previous year. YPF has set an objective of reaching approximately 250,000 barrels per day of shale oil production by the end of 2026.

The numbers are part of a larger industrial process. Production growth requires drilling equipment, roads, pipelines, processing capacity, workers, technology, and investment. As these elements expand together, Vaca Muerta gradually moves from being primarily a geological resource toward becoming an increasingly integrated energy-producing region.

That development also feeds into YPF’s longer-term LNG ambitions. The company is pursuing the proposed Argentina LNG project with Eni and XRG, seeking to create an export system that could connect Vaca Muerta’s natural gas with overseas markets. The proposed project has an estimated investment of around $51 billion.

Still, energy markets remain sensitive to changes in commodity prices, operating costs, infrastructure limitations, and international demand. A higher investment forecast reflects confidence, but the final outcome will depend on how successfully production, infrastructure, financing, and market conditions develop together.

For now, YPF’s decision to raise its 2026 investment plan to $6.2 billion marks another indication of the growing role Vaca Muerta plays in the company’s strategy. The figures place Argentina’s shale industry on a path toward greater production and potentially broader participation in international energy markets.
