Beneath Germany’s Economic Horizon: Services Rebound in September While Manufacturing Continues Its Expanding Path

Germany's private-sector business activity expanded solidly in September, with the S&P Global Flash Composite PMI rising to 53.8 from 51.8 in August. The reading was the highest since October 2025.

A PMI reading above 50 indicates expansion. The September result therefore showed that activity was increasing across the private sector, with the improvement extending beyond manufacturing into services.

The services PMI rose to 52.9 from 49.7 in August, marking its highest level in seven months and ending a five-month sequence of contraction. The change provided an important part of the month's broader economic picture.

Manufacturing remained in expansion as well, although its PMI eased to 53.8 from 54.3. The sector therefore continued to contribute to overall growth even as the pace moderated slightly.

The two sectors together account for more than two-thirds of the German economy. Their simultaneous expansion offered a broader indication of economic activity than a manufacturing reading alone.

Employment also showed signs of improvement. S&P Global reported that employment increased for a second consecutive month, while companies maintained relatively stable expectations about the months ahead.

Yet the September picture was not without pressure. Input costs increased at their fastest rate in four months, with companies pointing to higher fuel and energy costs. Rising operating expenses can make an otherwise improving business environment more difficult to navigate.

The combination of stronger activity and higher costs leaves Germany's recovery moving along two parallel tracks. Businesses are receiving signs of improved demand, but they must also manage a renewed inflationary environment.

September's data therefore captures a moment of transition. Services returned to growth, manufacturing remained above the expansion threshold, and employment improved, while energy-related costs continued to cast a longer shadow over business planning. Germany's economic landscape was moving forward, but the path remained shaped by both renewed activity and persistent cost pressures.
