Bandits Kill Islamic Teacher, Abduct at Least 10 Residents in Sokoto Attack

SOKOTO, NIGERIA — An Islamic teacher was killed and at least ten residents were abducted after heavily armed bandits launched a late-night raid on Gidan Kare village in the Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

According to local sources, the attackers arrived in large numbers on motorcycles around 1:30 a.m., shooting sporadically into the air to instill panic among villagers. The slain Islamic teacher, identified by community leaders as Mallam Aliyu, was shot inside his residence during the chaos as he attempted to protect his family from the armed assailants.

Following the initial shooting, the bandits systematically ransacked several homes and commercial stalls, looting food supplies, livestock, and valuables before rounding up at least ten residents—including women and young children—and marching them off into the surrounding forest cover.

The incident has heightened security concerns across Tureta LGA, an area that has experienced recurring violent attacks and kidnappings for ransom. Local vigilante units and police teams were deployed to the scene shortly after the attack to secure the village, while joint security forces initiated search-and-rescue operations in nearby bushlands to locate the abducted victims and track down the perpetrators.

In response to the growing unrest, the Sokoto State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering security footprints across vulnerable rural communities in Tureta, Bodinga, and Dange Shuni LGAs. Command officials confirmed that specialized tactical units, supported by local hunters and intelligence officers, have been mobilized to seal off potential escape routes used by bandit networks in the dense forest enclaves.

Civil society groups and traditional leaders have reiterated calls on the Federal Government and military authorities to establish permanent forward operating bases in key border communities across Sokoto State. Local advocates emphasize that persistent security measures, rather than reactive patrol sweeps, are urgently required to dismantle bandit hideouts, secure rural transit routes, and safely return the kidnapped victims to their families.
