As Global Energy Prices Move Higher, Indonesia Keeps Its Interest Rate Steady at 5.75 Percent

Financial decisions often arrive quietly, announced in a room while markets elsewhere continue moving at their own pace. On Sept. 23, Bank Indonesia left its benchmark interest rate unchanged, keeping the BI-Rate at 5.75 percent as the country navigates currency pressures, global energy costs, and an uncertain international financial environment.

The decision followed the central bank’s latest policy meeting and marked the third consecutive month in which the benchmark rate has remained at 5.75 percent. Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti said the decision was consistent with efforts to stabilize the rupiah while keeping inflation within the government’s target range and supporting sustainable economic growth.

The rate decision comes against a backdrop of higher global energy prices and a recent increase in the United States Federal Reserve’s benchmark rate. The international movement matters because Indonesia remains connected to global capital flows, commodity prices, exchange rates, and investor demand for emerging-market assets.

Earlier in the year, Bank Indonesia raised its benchmark rate by a combined 100 basis points during May and June as the rupiah came under stronger pressure. The currency reached a reported historic low of Rp18,209 per U.S. dollar in June before recovering, with the exchange rate later moving around the Rp17,800 level.

Interest rates, however, do not move through the economy in a single direction. They influence borrowing costs, savings, investment decisions, financial-market conditions, and the relative attractiveness of domestic assets. For businesses and households, the effects can take time to appear, moving gradually from financial markets toward everyday economic activity.

The central bank is also watching inflation. Indonesia’s government has set an inflation target of 2.5 percent plus or minus one percentage point for 2026 and 2027. Keeping price growth within that range remains part of the framework Bank Indonesia cited when explaining its latest decision.

Global interest rates add another layer to the picture. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised its federal funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75–4 percent in September, according to analysis published by The Jakarta Post. Higher U.S. rates can affect emerging markets by influencing capital flows, bond yields, and exchange-rate pressures.

For Indonesia, that leaves monetary policy balancing several moving parts at once. A stable rupiah can help reduce imported inflation pressures, while economic growth requires financial conditions that allow businesses and consumers to continue operating. The latest decision therefore keeps the benchmark rate at a level policymakers have maintained since June.

As September moves toward its final days, the 5.75 percent BI-Rate becomes another fixed point in an otherwise changing global financial landscape. Bank Indonesia will continue to watch the rupiah, inflation, external pressures, and domestic growth as the year moves into its final quarter.
