Brazil’s space research agency Inpe reported that 3,335 square kilometers of Amazon forest were cleared between August 2025 and July 2026. That is the lowest annual deforestation figure since records began in 1988, and nearly 42% below the 5,731 square kilometers recorded in the previous 12-month period. Environment officials credited enforcement efforts under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He has pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2030. The figures were released ahead of Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff election.
