ISTANBUL, Turkey — A 21-year-old suspected Daesh (ISIS) terrorist was shot dead during a violent pre-dawn counter-terrorism raid in Istanbul on Friday, September 4, 2026 after opening fire on security forces attempting to execute an arrest warrant.
The targeted operation, conducted by special operations officers and counter-terrorism squads, turned into a prolonged firefight inside a residential neighborhood before police neutralized the suspect.
According to statements from the Istanbul Security Directorate, intelligence units had been monitoring the suspect following evidence linking him to active Daesh cells planning potential attacks within urban centers. Tactical units moved in to surround the target location early Friday morning, establishing a secure perimeter around the apartment building.
When officers announced their presence and ordered the suspect to surrender, the 21-year-old opened fire through the doorway using an automatic weapon. First responders immediately returned fire and called for tactical support as the suspect barricaded himself inside the unit and continued engaging officers.
Special forces deployed tear gas and tactical breaching equipment to gain entry while taking heavy fire. During the intense exchange of gunfire, the suspect sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel embedded with the strike team.
Two police officers suffered minor injuries from flying debris and glass shrapnel during the assault. Emergency medical teams treated both officers on-site before transferring them to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Following the neutralization of the suspect, forensic teams and bomb disposal specialists thoroughly searched the residence. Authorities recovered an automatic rifle, several high-capacity magazines, improvised explosive device (IED) components, and digital materials containing extremist literature and operational plans.
The Turkish Ministry of Interior confirmed that a broader investigation is underway to identify potential co-conspirators, financial networks, and local contacts linked to the suspect. Security forces across Istanbul remain on high alert as counter-terrorism sweeps continue across several districts to dismantle remaining sleeper cells.
