Airstrike on the Border: Myanmar Junta Bombs Rebel Base Opposite Thai Village

MAE HONG SON, Thailand — Explosions rattled the sovereign border of northern Thailand on Saturday evening, October 31, 2026 after Myanmar military aircraft dropped two high-explosive bombs on a resistance outpost across the Salween River, sending fire, thick smoke, and violent shockwaves into a nearby Thai riverside community.

The strike targeted a Karen National Union (KNU) position in Saw Lae Tha village, situated directly opposite Ban Mae Sam Laep pier in Mae Hong Son’s Sop Moei district.

Although the air attack landed on the Myanmar side of the riverbank, the force of the detonation immediately reverberated across the water into Thai territory. Plumes of dark smoke drifted over Mae Sam Laep, while shockwaves tore through structures along the Thai bank.

Local authorities reported that shattered glass and structural damage were sustained across multiple public and religious buildings on the Thai side. At the Ban Mae Sam Laep Health Center, four glass door panels and four windows were blown out, while portions of the ceiling collapsed. Nearby, the Salween Conference Building had multiple door panes shattered by the blast impact, and the village church suffered a shattered window pane alongside sections of its overhead ceiling giving way.

At the time of the bombardment, local administrative staff and construction crews working on a new riverside viewpoint along the Salween River were forced to take immediate cover.

"Before local officials could take further preventive action, two bombs struck the opposite bank," noted Phongphiphat Mibenjamat, chief of the Mae Sam Laep Subdistrict Administrative Organisation. "The shockwaves rattled the entire village and damaged nearby structures within seconds."

Following the escalation, Thai Ranger units, Volunteer Defence Corps personnel, and local security officers immediately moved to secure the perimeter along the Salween River. Military commanders ordered civilians residing along the immediate riverbank to temporarily relocate further inland to relatives' homes as a precautionary safety measure against potential follow-up strikes or stray munitions.

No casualties or fatalities were reported on the Thai side of the border following overnight safety sweeps.

The incident highlights the growing volatility along the Thailand-Myanmar frontier, where intense fighting between junta forces and ethnic armed resistance groups has repeatedly spilled over into border communities.

Thai border security patrols remain on high alert, with joint military and civilian teams conducting further inspections of residential properties and local schools to assess the full extent of structural damage.
