Across California’s Circuits, Custom Chips Carry the Rising Weight of Artificial Intelligence Into Tomorrow’s Digital Landscape

Marvell Technology raised its fiscal 2028 revenue forecast to approximately $20 billion on October 6, above Wall Street expectations, as demand for its custom data-center chips continues to grow alongside expanding artificial intelligence investment.

The announcement immediately found its way into financial markets. Marvell shares rose about 6%, while rival Broadcom gained around 4%. The movement reflected investor attention toward semiconductor companies that are positioned to supply the physical infrastructure required by the rapidly expanding AI industry.

Marvell's strategy has increasingly centered on custom and cloud-optimized silicon. Since 2021, the company has focused on chips designed for particular data-center applications, allowing major technology companies to build computing systems around specialized requirements rather than depending entirely on standardized processors.

That business is now expected to become even more important. Marvell projects approximately $12 billion in custom-chip revenue for fiscal 2029, compared with its previous target of $10 billion. The company also disclosed a deal with Google's parent company, Alphabet, that could generate as much as $120 billion in sales through fiscal 2033 if specified performance milestones are achieved.

The longer-term numbers are equally striking. Marvell projected fiscal 2031 revenue between $70 billion and $90 billion. At the midpoint, that would be significantly higher than current analyst expectations, suggesting how strongly the company expects demand for AI-related infrastructure to influence its future.

Behind those forecasts is a gradual change in the relationship between software and hardware. The development of increasingly capable AI systems requires enormous quantities of computing power. As companies seek greater efficiency and control over those systems, custom chips have become an increasingly important part of the infrastructure equation.

This movement also changes the semiconductor landscape. Nvidia remains a dominant supplier of AI processors, but technology companies are increasingly developing their own processors or turning to specialized chip designers to reduce costs, improve efficiency, or tailor hardware to particular workloads.

The growth of Marvell's custom-chip business therefore reflects something larger than one company's financial forecast. It illustrates how the AI boom is spreading through different layers of the technology industry, from software laboratories to semiconductor facilities and ultimately to the data centers where computing takes place.

For now, Marvell's projections remain forecasts, and the technology industry continues to move through a period of rapid investment and competition. Yet the direction is becoming increasingly visible. As artificial intelligence expands, the demand for the silicon beneath it is expanding too, giving the quiet world of semiconductor design an increasingly central place in the digital economy.
