Across Argentina’s Urban Economy, Artificial Intelligence Begins Reshaping the Work Behind Everyday Services

In the quiet spaces between a customer and a screen, between an office worker and a spreadsheet, between a question and an automated answer, the shape of work is gradually changing. Artificial intelligence does not always arrive with machinery or dramatic announcements. Sometimes it appears simply as another tool on a computer, taking over a task that once occupied part of a person’s afternoon.

Argentina is emerging as one of Latin America’s economies particularly exposed to the transformation brought by artificial intelligence. A study highlighted by the Buenos Aires Herald places the country in a vulnerable position because a large share of its urban economy is concentrated in service-based occupations that contain tasks increasingly capable of being assisted or automated by AI. The exposure does not necessarily mean that jobs will disappear immediately. Instead, it points toward the number of tasks within different occupations that could be performed differently as AI systems become more capable. Administrative work, customer support, data processing, finance, communications, and other knowledge-intensive activities can contain repetitive elements that lend themselves to automation.

Argentina’s economic structure makes that distinction particularly relevant. Its major cities have developed extensive service sectors, including professional services, finance, technology, education, communications, and administrative activities. These sectors rely heavily on human knowledge and digital information, two areas where AI systems are increasingly being deployed.

The transformation is therefore likely to be uneven. Some occupations may see AI used primarily as an assistant, helping workers summarize documents, organize information, write drafts, analyze data, or handle routine inquiries. Other roles may experience more significant changes as businesses discover that certain processes can be performed with fewer human steps.

For workers, this creates a more complicated landscape than the simple idea of replacement. The ability to work alongside AI may become increasingly important, while knowledge of how to verify, interpret, and apply machine-generated information could become part of ordinary professional skills.

Businesses are also approaching the technology from different directions. Some are experimenting with generative AI tools at relatively small scale, while others are considering more extensive automation of customer-service, software-development, financial, and administrative processes.

The pace of change will depend on more than the technology itself. Internet infrastructure, access to computing resources, investment, education, workplace training, regulation, and the cost of implementing AI systems can all influence how quickly companies adopt them.

For Argentina, the study offers a view of an economy standing between two moments: the familiar world of service work and a future in which some of that work may be performed alongside increasingly capable machines. The transition is unlikely to happen all at once. It will arrive through countless small decisions, screens, software updates, and altered routines, gradually changing the character of work without always announcing when the change has begun.
