Across America’s Medical Industry, Global Drugmakers Build New Factories Beneath a Changing Healthcare Landscape

Across the American healthcare landscape, another kind of construction is taking place. Behind hospitals and pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies are building laboratories, factories and supply networks designed to bring more of medicine's production closer to home.

Global drugmakers have announced more than $500 billion in investments in the United States, according to Reuters, with companies including Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Roche, AstraZeneca and Novartis expanding their American operations.

The investment wave includes both manufacturing and research. Pharmaceutical companies are increasing domestic production capacity while also directing capital toward laboratories and development facilities, creating a broader footprint for the industry.

Pfizer has announced plans to invest $70 billion in research and development and domestic manufacturing. Eli Lilly is planning six U.S. plants, while Johnson & Johnson has said it will increase its U.S. investments by 25%, bringing its planned commitment to $55 billion.

Other companies are moving in the same direction. Roche has committed more than $50 billion to the United States, AstraZeneca has announced $50 billion of investment through 2030, and Novartis plans to build or expand 10 American sites with an investment of $23 billion.

The movement reflects the changing geography of pharmaceutical production. For years, drugmakers have relied on complex international supply chains, with ingredients, components and finished medicines often crossing several borders before reaching patients.

Bringing more production into the United States can provide companies with greater control over parts of that chain. It can also create new manufacturing jobs and expand the country's capacity to produce medicines and pharmaceutical ingredients.

The investments are occurring amid broader concerns about supply-chain resilience and the cost of imported medicines. Companies are balancing commercial decisions with the need to maintain reliable access to materials, equipment and production capacity.

Research is another important part of the expansion. New laboratories can support the development of medicines, while manufacturing facilities can help translate successful research into products that can eventually reach patients.

The scale of the commitments makes the trend notable. More than $500 billion in announced investment represents a significant restructuring of the pharmaceutical industry's American presence, combining manufacturing, research and supply-chain expansion.

For the U.S. healthcare industry, the coming years will show how quickly those commitments become operating facilities, new research programs and expanded production. For now, pharmaceutical companies are placing substantial capital behind a larger American footprint for medicine.
