Modern technology often begins as something almost weightless: a line of code, a digital signal, a calculation made somewhere inside a machine. Yet behind that invisible world stands a much heavier landscape of buildings, electricity networks, transportation systems and capital.

That physical foundation is now attracting another wave of investment in the United States. Bank of America said Wednesday that it plans to deploy $250 billion by July 2027 to support digital and infrastructure projects across the country.

The bank's initiative will cover three broad areas: digital infrastructure, energy and power infrastructure, and core infrastructure. Data centers and computing capacity sit alongside renewable generation, energy storage, transportation and natural-gas infrastructure within the program.

The announcement arrives as artificial intelligence continues to increase demand for computing capacity. Large data centers require substantial amounts of electricity and supporting infrastructure, creating connections between the technology industry and traditional sectors such as construction and energy.

For financial institutions, that demand represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Projects of this scale require significant financing before they can begin operating, and banks can provide lending, investment, capital-markets services and advisory support.

Bank of America's initiative is structured to provide those different forms of financial assistance. The $250 billion target will be measured over an 18-month period running from January 1, 2026, through July 4, 2027.

The broader infrastructure landscape is also becoming more interconnected. A data center cannot operate without reliable electricity, while new energy facilities depend on transportation, communications and other supporting systems.

That relationship has become increasingly visible as companies expand artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Computing facilities are being built alongside efforts to increase power generation and storage capacity, creating a larger ecosystem around the technology.

Bank of America is not alone in directing large amounts of capital toward infrastructure. Reuters reported that Morgan Stanley recently announced plans to facilitate roughly $1.5 trillion over the next decade for technology and infrastructure projects, while JPMorgan Chase launched a $1.5 trillion initiative last year focused on industries considered important to economic resilience.

The scale of these commitments suggests that infrastructure is becoming a major investment theme in its own right. The projects will take years to build, finance and operate, meaning today's commitments could shape the physical character of parts of the American economy well into the future.

Bank of America expects its program to support economic growth and create tens of thousands of long-term jobs. For now, the $250 billion commitment places another large pool of private capital behind America's digital, energy and transportation infrastructure.
