Above the World’s Airports, Singapore Airlines Reclaims the Crown in a Changing Global Travel Landscape

At airports around the world, passengers experience an airline through small moments: a boarding announcement, a meal arriving at cruising altitude, a seat becoming a temporary home. In 2026, those experiences placed Singapore Airlines once again at the top of Skytrax’s global airline awards.

Singapore Airlines was named the world’s best airline at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards in London on September 18. It was the sixth time the carrier had received the overall title, after previously winning it in 2023.

Qatar Airways ranked second and Cathay Pacific Airways third, while All Nippon Airways took fourth place and Turkish Airlines completed the top five. The results were based on surveys covering more than 24.8 million travelers worldwide and more than 300 airlines.

Singapore Airlines also received several additional awards. It was named the world’s best economy class, won the award for world’s best economy-class onboard catering and was recognized as the best airline in Asia.

The recognition arrives as international air travel continues to recover and evolve after years of disruption. Airlines are balancing passenger demand with fuel costs, aircraft availability, staffing requirements and increasingly complex global routes.

SIA and its low-cost subsidiary Scoot carried a record combined 42.4 million passengers during the 2025–2026 financial year, an increase of 7.7% from the previous year’s 39.4 million passengers.

Yet the award comes alongside financial pressures. Singapore Airlines reported a net loss of S$76 million in the first quarter of 2026, with higher net fuel costs and losses associated with Air India affecting the results.

The airline is also dealing with supply-chain constraints. The introduction of new first- and business-class seats on some Airbus A350 aircraft has been delayed until the first quarter of 2027, later than the original target.

That contrast between customer recognition and operational pressure reflects the complexity of modern aviation. An airline can receive strong passenger feedback while simultaneously facing higher costs, equipment delays and changing market conditions.

For Singapore Airlines, the 2026 award places the carrier once again at the center of the international aviation conversation. Above the terminals of Changi and the long routes connecting Singapore with the rest of the world, the familiar blue-and-gold aircraft continue carrying a reputation built through decades of service.
