A Viral Ripple Through Crowds: Measles Travels From Airport to Amusement Park

Measles Cases Grow in Southern California; Infected Visitor Flew Into LAX, Visited Disney Park Like a distant echo growing louder, an infectious disease once thought largely relegated to history is again drawing attention in Southern California. Health officials say that measles cases are increasing in the region — and in one instance, an infected individual traveled through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and spent hours at Disneyland Resort locations, potentially exposing many visitors and workers to the highly contagious virus.

Local health agencies, including the Orange County Health Care Agency and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, have confirmed several measles cases over recent days. One of the most concerning involves an international traveler who arrived at LAX, then visited Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and afterward Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park from 12:30 p.m. until closing on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026.

Visitors who were at these locations during the specified times may have been exposed and could develop symptoms between 7 and 21 days after contact with the virus, officials said. Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes — and because it’s so contagious, even brief exposure in crowded spaces can lead to transmission, particularly among people who are not fully vaccinated.

Southern California has recently seen multiple confirmed measles cases in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Health officials are working to identify and notify individuals who may have had contact with these cases, and are urging everyone to check their vaccination status — especially the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, which offers strong protection when the full series is completed.

Medical experts stress that measles remains a serious public health concern because of how widely it can spread in public settings like airports and theme parks. Local agencies ask that anyone who was at the potentially exposed locations during the times listed monitor their health and contact a healthcare provider if symptoms arise.
