A Quiet Turn: Europe Upgraded, Expectations Reawakened

Morning breaks over European markets with a subtle shift in tone — cautious optimism replacing hesitation. What had been quietly watched from the sidelines is now being called a turn. JP Morgan, after months of neutrality, has raised its stance on euro zone equities to overweight, citing renewed value and policy tailwinds.

The bank’s strategists, led by Mislav Matejka, argue that euro zone stocks have lagged U.S. counterparts by nearly 18 percent, making them relatively cheap on a valuation basis. The underperformance, they suggest, may now offer a springboard, not a barrier. The upgrade reflects belief that the region is entering a phase where risk and reward begin to tilt favorably.

JP Morgan points to several catalysts: Germany’s willingness to engage in further stimulus, an improving credit impulse across the bloc, and the removal of tariffs that had weighed on European trade. In sectors like defense, industrials, utilities, and construction materials, they see room for upside, especially as capital expenditure accelerates. The firm also sees earnings growth and share buybacks as potential support.

Still, caution lingers. Political volatility — particularly in France — remains a wildcard. Any domestic shock or governance crisis could provoke contagion. Matejka and his team suggest that investors should treat dips as potential entry points rather than signals of trend reversal.

In the face of delicate momentum, JP Morgan’s shift is more than a rating change — it’s a signal that Europe may reemerge as a theater of opportunity. As markets adjust, this may invite reallocation flows, sector rotation, and renewed confidence in continental equities.
