Between Record Heat and First Frost, a Storm Passes Through

There is a particular kind of threshold that autumn crosses each year, usually without announcement. The air changes texture. The leaves, still clinging to their branches, begin to lose their grip. And somewhere in the upper Midwest, a cold front gathers strength, preparing to sweep eastward with the quiet determination of a season turning its page.

A powerful storm system is forecast to move through the Great Lakes on Thursday before soaking the Northeast on Friday with rain, thunderstorms, and strong wind gusts. Behind it, the coldest air of the season so far will spread across the region this weekend, potentially dusting higher elevations with their first snow.

The storm was initially expected to "bomb out" off the New England coast, intensifying rapidly in a process called bombogenesis. But forecasters now say the system will come close without meeting that threshold. Regardless, the New England coast could still see wind gusts between 30 and 40 miles per hour on Friday, with peaks as high as 50 miles per hour, along with potentially dangerous maritime conditions.

Rain will arrive across the Northeast, including the Interstate 95 corridor, by Friday morning, creating a slick commute for millions. Wind gusts between 25 and 40 miles per hour are expected across the region, including Boston and New York City. Severe storms could develop across the Mid-Atlantic and New York's Catskills and Hudson Valley regions in the afternoon, with damaging wind gusts as the main threat.

Behind the storm, the coldest air of the season will quickly spread, abruptly ending the record-setting heat much of the eastern United States experienced earlier this week. Interior valleys in Pennsylvania, along with parts of Upstate New York and Northern New England, could see morning lows this weekend drop into the upper 20s and low 30s.

Higher elevations in the Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and White Mountains could see 1 to 3 inches of snow by Saturday night. Parts of the Ohio Valley, Northern New Jersey, and New York's Hudson Valley could see their first frost of the season. For those who treasure autumn's slow descent, this weekend will feel less like a transition and more like a push—a reminder that the season's gentler days are finite, and the cold keeps its own schedule.
