A Municipal Election and the Small Ceremonies of Democracy.

There is a quiet ritual to the act of voting, a small ceremony of citizenship that unfolds in school gymnasiums and community centers across a city. On Monday, Ottawa residents will participate in that ritual, choosing their next mayor, city councilors, and school board trustees in a municipal election that will shape the city's direction for years to come.

Polls opened at 10 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m. across 369 voting locations in the city . Residents must vote at their assigned station in the ward where they live, and can find that location using the city's "Where Do I Vote?" tool or by checking their voter notification letter . The city has emphasized that all voting places are fully accessible, with large print ballots, magnifying sheets, accessible vote tabulators, and curbside voting available for those who need them .

For those who have not yet confirmed their registration, the process remains straightforward. Anyone who is a resident of Ottawa, a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, and not prohibited from voting by law is eligible . Voters can verify their information on the city's online tool until 8 p.m., or call the elections office directly. Those not on the list can complete an application to add or amend information at their polling station .

What voters need to bring is simple: one piece of personal identification with their name and address. Photo identification is not required. Acceptable forms include an Ontario driver's license, health card, a lease or rental agreement, a utility bill, or a bank statement . Those who cannot present acceptable identification will be required to make a statutory declaration at their voting place before receiving a ballot .

The city expects a busy day. Early voting for this year's municipal election was up compared with 2022, and City Clerk Caitlin Salter-MacDonald said the elections office is prepared. "We do feel ready," she said. "We have our team at the elections office available throughout the day to answer any questions that folks might have, and our teams are out in the voting places ready to serve electors" .

For those unable to get to their voting place, a proxy can be appointed to cast a vote until 6 p.m. . The city will publish unofficial results on its website after 8 p.m., when the polls close and the counting begins .

There is nothing dramatic about this process, and that is precisely the point. A municipal election is not a national referendum or a historic turning point. It is the ordinary work of local democracy, the choosing of the people who will decide how the city's roads are maintained, how its services are delivered, and how its neighborhoods grow. The polls are open. The rest is up to the voters.
