A Megacity in Colour: Lagos’s Streets Awaken as an Open-Air

There are moments when a city stops being just a collection of streets and becomes, instead, a shared canvas of expression — where every wall holds a whisper, a shout, or a burst of colour. Lagos, Nigeria’s sprawling and ceaselessly energetic metropolis, recently found itself transformed in just such a way. With the launch of its first Street Art Festival, parts of the city have become what the organisers call an “open-air gallery” — a space where art meets everyday life in the rhythm of urban motion.

For Lagosians and visitors alike, this festival has stitched fresh hues into the city’s vast tapestry, inviting passersby to slow their pace and absorb murals that rise boldly from concrete backdrops. Under the theme “Legendary Lagos: City of Dreams,” a cadre of 12 artists — nine local and three international — have been painting walls across neighbourhoods in Victoria Island and beyond. Their work doesn’t merely decorate; it engages, suggests narratives of unity, aspiration, resilience, and the collective heartbeat of a city famed for its energy.

One of the organisers, artist Osa Okunkpolor — better known as Osa Seven in creative circles — said the festival’s goal is to take art out of traditional museum spaces and into the everyday environment, making it accessible to all who traverse the city’s streets. “Art shouldn’t be confined to galleries and museums,” he observed, stressing that when creativity is woven into daily life, it can become a wellspring of inspiration and hope.

The murals themselves are as varied as the people who live among them. Some celebrate the dynamism of Lagos’s rhythms — the motion of people, music, market calls, late-night lights — while others reflect themes of migration, unity, and the city’s embrace of dreams from all walks of life. Lithuanian artist Andrey Adno’s piece, titled “The Pace of Lagos,” captures the city’s kinetic energy, while Nigerian artist HK Locks explores the blending of cultures that makes Lagos a true melting pot.

This blossoming of public art arrives at a moment when Lagos has already been cementing its reputation as a cultural hub through events like Art X Lagos, an internationally recognised art fair that attracts curators, collectors, and enthusiasts from across Africa and beyond. These overlapping celebrations of creativity — from galleries to open streets — reflect not just Lagos’s artistic vibrancy but also its evolving identity as a place where diverse voices and visions can mingle.

As the festival unfolds against the backdrop of everyday life — motorbikes weaving through traffic, vendors calling out their wares, commuters moving briskly — the newly adorned murals invite a pause, a second look. In these intersections of colour and concrete, Lagos reveals itself as more than a city of motion: it becomes a living testament to the belief that art can flourish in public, untethered from walls that once confined it, and open to every eye that wanders its avenues.
