If all goes according to plan, NASA’s current launch window opens on Feb. 6, 2026, with additional windows available through March and April to take advantage of optimal lunar trajectories. Artemis 2 will not attempt a Moon landing; instead, for about 10 days, Orion and its crew will loop around the Moon on a free-return trajectory, using Earth’s and lunar gravity to carry them into deep space and back home. Data gathered on life support, spacecraft performance, and deep-space navigation will be key for future missions, including Artemis 3, which aims to land astronauts near the lunar south pole.

With the rocket poised on the pad and critical rehearsals looming, the Artemis 2 mission stands at the threshold of an historic voyage — NASA’s first crewed lunar flight in over half a century. Each step from here is a test of procedure, hardware, and human readiness, and while the exact launch date will only be confirmed after these checks are complete, the presence of the SLS and Orion spacecraft at Pad 39B is a vivid reminder of how far Earth’s space-exploration ambitions have traveled.
