YouTube Expands Testing of In-App Direct Messages Across Europe

YouTube is continuing to test a direct messaging feature inside its app, expanding the experiment to users across a growing number of European countries. The move marks a renewed attempt by the video platform to integrate private communication tools into its ecosystem.

The feature allows users to send messages directly within the YouTube application, potentially enabling viewers to share videos, discuss content, and communicate without leaving the platform. The test has recently become available to users in 31 European countries, according to reports about the ongoing rollout.

This is not the first time YouTube has explored in-app messaging. The platform originally introduced a similar feature in 2017 as part of an effort to make video sharing more social and interactive. At the time, users could send videos and messages directly to friends through the app.

However, the messaging service was discontinued two years later after limited adoption. YouTube subsequently shifted its focus back toward its core offerings, including video recommendations, creator tools, and community features.

The renewed testing suggests the company may once again be exploring ways to strengthen user engagement and keep conversations about videos inside the platform. Messaging tools have become a central part of many digital platforms, helping drive interaction and content sharing among users.

The latest trial reportedly began in November 2025 with a smaller group of users in Poland and Ireland. The test has since expanded to additional countries across Europe, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Denmark.

Technology companies frequently test new features in selected markets before deciding whether to launch them globally. These trials allow platforms to measure user interest, monitor performance, and refine the design of new tools.

For YouTube, messaging could potentially create new ways for viewers to interact with creators and with each other. Direct communication features may also encourage users to spend more time within the app, sharing videos and recommendations through built-in conversations.

At the same time, introducing messaging tools can raise questions about moderation, privacy, and user safety. Platforms typically evaluate these considerations carefully before rolling out communication features more widely.
