XRP Surges Nearly 50% in a Week as Market Momentum Returns

XRP has staged one of its strongest rallies in nearly two years, climbing roughly 50% over the past week after recently trading near $1. The rebound comes amid improving crypto-market sentiment, short liquidations and continued expansion across Ripple’s institutional ecosystem.

XRP Surges Nearly 50% in a Week as Market Momentum Returns

XRP has returned to the center of the cryptocurrency market after delivering an explosive recovery from the $1 region.

As of August 24, XRP was trading around $1.47–$1.48 in current market reporting, after gaining roughly 50% over the past week. One report described the move as XRP's strongest performance in approximately 21 months.

The speed of the recovery is particularly striking.

Only days ago, XRP was struggling around the psychologically important $1 threshold. It has since moved substantially higher, turning what had been a defensive battle around $1 into one of the strongest large-cap crypto rallies of the month.

But the move isn't being driven by one XRP-specific headline.

Several factors appear to be converging at once.

XRP's $1 Defense Turns Into a Major Rally

The $1 level had become one of XRP's most important market reference points during August.

After prolonged weakness during 2026, XRP spent much of the month close to that threshold before sentiment changed dramatically.

By August 22, reporting showed XRP trading above $1.50 after moving from approximately $1 to $1.53 in just four days — a gain of roughly 53%.

That recovery fundamentally changed XRP's short-term technical picture.

Instead of asking whether XRP could maintain $1, traders are now watching whether the asset can hold its recent gains and potentially challenge higher resistance levels.

Short Liquidations Helped Accelerate XRP

One important factor behind the speed of the move has been leverage.

When cryptocurrency prices rise rapidly, traders holding leveraged short positions can be forced to close those positions.

Closing a short generally requires buying the underlying asset or contract, potentially adding further upward pressure.

Recent market reporting has pointed to substantial short liquidations across crypto during the rally.

That means part of XRP's explosive recovery may have been amplified by traders who were positioned for additional downside being forced out as the market reversed.

This is important because short squeezes can make price movements considerably more aggressive than ordinary spot-market buying.

They can also increase volatility in both directions.

Liquidity Optimism Lifts the Broader Market

XRP hasn't been moving in isolation.

The wider cryptocurrency market has also experienced a major improvement in sentiment.

Altcoins collectively added approximately $215 billion in market capitalization between August 19 and August 22, according to market reporting, taking the crypto market excluding Bitcoin back above $1 trillion.

This broader recovery suggests XRP's rally should not be attributed entirely to developments involving Ripple or XRPL.

Improving risk appetite and liquidity conditions have helped lift multiple digital assets.

XRP, however, has been one of the strongest performers during that shift.

Ripple's Institutional Expansion Provides a Bigger Backdrop

While broader market conditions are helping XRP, Ripple has simultaneously been expanding its institutional financial infrastructure.

Recent developments have included Ripple Payments entering South Korea's regional banking sector, expansion of RLUSD, Ripple Prime's institutional financing and new credit-market initiatives.

Ripple is also backing institutional lending infrastructure involving RLUSD, Clearpool and Cicada Partners, designed to provide working-capital financing to fintech and payments companies through infrastructure connected with the XRP Ledger.

This doesn't prove those developments caused XRP's rally.

But they provide a fundamental backdrop that differs considerably from XRP's previous speculative market cycles.

XRPL Is Moving Beyond Payments

The XRP Ledger itself is also undergoing an important transition.

Historically, XRPL has been strongly associated with payments and XRP transfers.

The ecosystem is increasingly expanding into stablecoins, tokenization, institutional credit and decentralized finance.

Ripple has backed proposed XRP Ledger upgrades involving native asset vaults and fixed-term lending.

Those proposals — XLS-65 and XLS-66 — could introduce protocol-level infrastructure supporting institutional lending directly on XRPL if they receive the required validator support.

Importantly, these features should not yet be described as fully active.

They remain subject to XRPL's amendment and validator process.

RLUSD Adds Another Institutional Layer

Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin is becoming increasingly important to this strategy.

The newly announced institutional credit initiative intends to use RLUSD as a lending asset for fintech and payments companies.

Cicada Partners is expected to handle areas including borrower selection, lending terms and credit-risk monitoring, while Clearpool develops the lending-pool infrastructure.

That represents a significant expansion in RLUSD's potential utility.

Instead of being used only for payments and settlement, the stablecoin could become part of institutional credit markets.

For XRPL, that potentially creates another category of financial activity occurring on the network.

Does This Automatically Increase Demand for XRP?

Not necessarily.

This distinction remains extremely important.

Ripple's institutional expansion, RLUSD growth and XRP Ledger adoption do not automatically translate into equivalent XRP purchases.

RLUSD lending, for example, uses RLUSD as the dollar-denominated asset.

XRP remains XRPL's native digital asset and is required for functions including transaction fees and account reserves, but that doesn't mean every dollar moving across XRPL generates a dollar of XRP demand.

The stronger long-term argument is based on ecosystem expansion.

If substantially more financial activity takes place on XRPL, XRP sits at the center of a larger and potentially more economically significant blockchain network.

Whether that translates into sustained XRP price appreciation depends on actual usage, liquidity and demand.

Can XRP Keep Going?

After such a rapid rally, the next phase could be considerably more difficult.

An asset rising approximately 50% in a week naturally attracts profit-taking.

Some analysts are watching the $1.65–$1.70 region as an important potential resistance area, with $2 representing a much larger psychological target if bullish momentum continues. These are technical scenarios rather than guaranteed price targets.

The downside deserves equal attention.

If broader crypto sentiment weakens or leveraged bullish positioning becomes excessive, XRP could experience a sharp retracement.

The same leverage that accelerates a rally can amplify losses when the market reverses.

The XRP Narrative Has Changed Quickly

Perhaps the most remarkable part of the current XRP story is how rapidly sentiment has shifted.

Earlier this month, the central question was whether XRP could survive another sustained break below $1.

Now traders are discussing whether XRP can establish itself above $1.50 and eventually challenge $2.

Meanwhile, Ripple continues expanding institutional infrastructure and XRPL developers are working toward broader financial functionality.

That doesn't eliminate market risk.

But it means XRP enters the final part of August with considerably stronger momentum than it had only days earlier.

Final Take

XRP has delivered one of the cryptocurrency market's most dramatic August reversals.

After recently struggling around $1, XRP has surged roughly 50% over the past week, with current reporting placing it around $1.47–$1.48.

Short liquidations, improving market liquidity and a broader altcoin recovery appear to have contributed to the move.

At the same time, Ripple's institutional ecosystem continues expanding across stablecoins, payments, prime brokerage, tokenization and lending.

Those developments shouldn't be used to guarantee higher XRP prices.

But after months of weakness, the combination of renewed market momentum and continued ecosystem development has put XRP firmly back into the spotlight.

The next test is no longer simply whether XRP can defend $1.

It's whether XRP can turn this explosive recovery into sustained momentum.
