Workplace Injury Leads to Major Fine for Christchurch’s French Bakery

A Christchurch bakery with a long history of safety concerns has been fined $245,000 after a worker suffered a serious workplace injury that resulted in the loss of a finger.

The incident occurred at Christchurch’s French Bakery, where an employee became caught in a piece of machinery while carrying out work duties. The accident caused severe injuries, ultimately leading to the amputation of the worker’s finger.

Following an investigation by WorkSafe New Zealand, the company was prosecuted for failing to ensure the safety of its workers. Authorities determined that the bakery had not adequately controlled the risks associated with operating machinery in the workplace.

The case highlighted a troubling safety record. WorkSafe noted that the bakery had been involved in previous interactions with the regulator over workplace safety issues prior to the accident. Those earlier engagements raised concerns about whether sufficient improvements had been made to protect employees.

Investigators found that the machinery involved in the incident lacked adequate safeguards to prevent workers from coming into contact with dangerous moving parts. Proper guarding and safer operating procedures could have significantly reduced the risk of injury.

Under New Zealand workplace safety law, businesses must take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure workers are protected from harm. That includes identifying hazards, implementing safety controls, and ensuring equipment is properly maintained and safe to use.

The court ultimately imposed a fine of $245,000 on the bakery, reflecting the seriousness of the injury and the company’s responsibility to maintain safe working conditions.

WorkSafe said the case serves as a reminder that machinery-related injuries remain a major risk across many industries. Without appropriate safeguards, equipment used daily in workplaces can quickly become dangerous.

For workers in manufacturing and food production environments, safety measures such as machine guarding, emergency stop systems, and proper training are critical to preventing life-changing injuries.

Authorities hope the penalty will encourage businesses to take stronger steps to identify risks before accidents occur. Workplace safety regulators stress that employers must be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to protecting employees.

For the injured worker, the consequences of the incident are permanent. Cases like this underline how failures in workplace safety can have lasting human impacts far beyond the financial penalties imposed on companies.
