With blood on his hands, he ran toward the danger, not away

At 5:15 on a Sunday morning, when most of Brisbane was still wrapped in the quiet of sleep, two police officers knocked on a door on Bogong Street in Hemmant. They had been called to a domestic disturbance—a father and a son, voices raised, the kind of call that officers answer hundreds of times without incident. But sometimes the ordinary turns in an instant, and what remains is the measure of how someone responds when the worst arrives.

The officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. Then, according to police, the son retrieved an implement and attacked. One officer was stabbed in the neck and torso. The other, a senior constable, was slashed across the forehead and forearm . The alleged attacker fled on a bicycle, then abandoned it and continued on foot .

What happened next is the part that has been repeated across Queensland in the days since. The constable who had been stabbed—a man in his forties, a former Australian Red Cross worker who had graduated from the police academy only in July—pressed his hand against his own neck to slow the bleeding and ran after the suspect . He deployed his Taser. He stopped only when blood loss made it impossible to continue .

“Whilst holding onto his neck to stop the bleeding, he managed to chase after the offender, deploy a Taser but only had to stop because he was getting weary from the blood loss,” said Shane Prior, president of the Queensland Police Union . Prior called him “an absolute hero” . Acting Superintendent Heath McQueen praised the “commitment and courage” of both officers and the “split second decisions” they made in a fluid and dangerous situation .

The constable was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital and underwent surgery. He is in stable condition, awake and speaking, and will require further procedures for his injuries . The senior constable was also treated. The 35-year-old suspect was arrested about 7 a.m. outside a business and charged with two counts of attempted murder . He appeared in court on Monday .

Prior noted that the officer had been on the job for just ten weeks. “We may very well have been talking about a scenario where an officer was killed today just doing his job,” he said . The remark carried the weight of how close the morning had come to a different ending—one that would have left a wife without a husband, two young children without a father, and a police service mourning a recruit who had barely begun.

A newly graduated Queensland police officer was stabbed in the neck and torso during a domestic disturbance call in Hemmant on Sunday morning. Despite his injuries, he chased the fleeing suspect and deployed his Taser before stopping due to blood loss. The 35-year-old suspect has been charged with two counts of attempted murder. The officer is recovering in stable condition.
