Wildfire Escalation: Fast-Moving Brush Fire Hits Gorman, Triggering Mass Evacuations and Freeway Closures

GORMAN, Calif. — Firefighters are battling a rapidly spreading brush fire near the Los Angeles–Kern County line that has ignited thousands of acres, forced widespread mandatory evacuations, and shut down critical transit corridors.

Driven by gusty winds, low humidity, and dry, dense vegetation, the blaze—dubbed the Post Fire—started early on Saturday, August 8, 2026 near Interstate 5 in Gorman. The flames quickly surged southward, threatening local structures, commercial centers, and nearby recreational areas.

As the fire expanded rapidly toward Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for surrounding residents, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Emergency personnel scrambled to move hundreds of people out of the path of danger as smoke plumes filled the sky and drifted across neighboring valleys.

"The fire is moving extremely fast due to the terrain and wind conditions," said a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. "Our immediate priority is life safety, getting residents out of high-risk areas, and establishing perimeter lines where we can."

Evacuation warnings remain in place for community’s further south, with officials warning that shifting wind patterns could force additional orders on short notice. Temporary shelter sites have been established to accommodate displaced residents and livestock.

The fast-moving wildfire forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down major lanes of Interstate 5 near the county line, causing massive traffic gridlock for weekend travelers. Ground crews and heavy equipment continue to work along the highway shoulders to clear burning brush and protect critical infrastructure.

Dozens of fire engines, water tenders, hand crews, and a fleet of air tankers dropping retardant have been deployed to contain the flanks of the blaze. However, steep, rugged terrain and erratic wind gusts continue to complicate containment efforts.
