Wholesale Prices Heat Up — December Inflation Surprises With Stronger‑Than‑Expected Momentum

In the latest economic data release, U.S. producer prices climbed 0.5% in December 2025, a larger increase than economists had forecast, fueled by rising costs in the services sector. The report, which measures inflation at the wholesale level before prices reach consumers, suggests that inflationary pressures are broader than expected heading into 2026.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Producer Price Index (PPI) — a key gauge of wholesale selling prices — jumped more than the consensus forecast of roughly 0.3%, marking the fastest monthly gain in three months. On an annual basis, producer prices were up 3.0%, roughly in line with expectations.

The increase was largely driven by an uptick in services prices, which rose about 0.7% in December — its biggest advance since mid‑2025 — reflecting wider profit margins at wholesalers and retailers. In contrast, goods prices such as appliances and autos were largely unchanged on a month‑to‑month basis, though they remain higher than a year ago.

Services inflation at the producer level can be an early indicator of future consumer inflation, especially because components of PPI feed into broader measures such as the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index — the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge. Rising wholesale service costs may point to persistent price pressures that could eventually show up in consumer bills for services like healthcare, travel, and housing‑related goods.

Economists note that the report comes in the context of overall inflation that remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, even as consumer price data earlier in January showed some easing in certain categories like gasoline and used car costs. The December PPI figures — delayed due to a prolonged federal government shutdown — provide another piece of the inflation puzzle as policymakers weigh future monetary decisions.

Overall, the stronger‑than‑expected rise in producer prices underscores the ongoing challenge of inflation persistence in parts of the U.S. economy, particularly in service industries where labor costs and profit margins remain substantial drivers of price growth.
