Where Tradition Meets Innovation: Italy Receives Its New Armored Titans

In a clear winter morning at the Italian Army’s testing grounds near Rome, a new chapter in Italy’s defense capabilities took tangible form. The first Lynx infantry fighting vehicles — modern armored platforms destined to reshape ground forces — were officially handed over to the Italian Army following years of planning, contracts, and industrial collaboration. The ceremony at the Centro Polifunzionale di Sperimentazione (CEPOLISPE) in Montelibretti brought together military leaders and industry executives, marking the beginning of a major renewal of Italy’s land systems.

The vehicles delivered are part of the A2CS (Army Armoured Combat System) programme, Italy’s ambitious effort to equip its forces with a new generation of mechanized platforms. On 27 January 2026, four Lynx KF41 combat vehicles were officially transferred to the Italian Army in a ceremony attended by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Chief of Defence Staff General Luciano Portolano, and Chief of Staff of the Army General Carmine Masiello, along with leaders from the Leonardo–Rheinmetall Military Vehicles joint venture.

The Lynx IFV — developed jointly by Leonardo of Italy and Rheinmetall of Germany — represents one of the most advanced platforms of its kind in Europe. Designed to enhance mobility, protection, and firepower on the battlefield, the vehicle provides a modular basis for numerous variants that will support future operational needs. The first four units are delivered in what is known as the “AS IS” configuration but will be progressively standardized with the Italian Army’s preferred systems.

This milestone follows a contract signed in late 2025 for the delivery of 21 Lynx vehicles, a foundational step in a wider plan that foresees over 1,000 armored vehicles of various roles being built and integrated over the next decade. The A2CS programme aims to replace aging models like the Dardo infantry fighting vehicles and M113 support vehicles, advancing Italy’s mechanized capabilities to 21st-century standards.

More than a simple handover, the event symbolizes deeper industrial and strategic cooperation between Italy and Germany. Through the Leonardo-Rheinmetall joint venture, approximately 60 % of production, integration, and support activities are expected to remain in Italy, bolstering both national defense industry and technological sovereignty.

In his remarks, Minister Crosetto underscored the importance of modern, flexible forces capable of responding to evolving security scenarios, while military leaders highlighted how the Lynx will form the backbone of the Italian Army’s heavy combat units. As these vehicles begin their service life, training and further testing will precede their full operational deployment in the coming years, signaling a significant shift in Italy’s land combat capabilities.
