The longer tool appears to have been carefully worked into a digging implement, one that could have helped pry roots or tubers from muddy soil, or probe the earth for food resources. The smaller fragment’s fine workmanship suggests a complementary role, perhaps in processing hides or assisting with stone tool production.

What makes this discovery especially compelling is its place in the timeline of early human technology. These wooden tools predate the emergence of modern Homo sapiens by more than 100,000 years, meaning they were likely crafted and used by earlier hominins — possibly Homo heidelbergensis, early Neanderthals or related ancestors who inhabited Europe during the Middle Pleistocene. At the same time and place, archaeologists have also found stone tools and cut‑marked animal bones, reinforcing the interpretation that this landscape was a hub of varied tool use and subsistence activities.

The rarity of such finds lies not only in their age but in their materiality. While stone and bone tools frequently populate archaeological records, wood — exceptionally useful in many contexts — almost always vanishes over time. When it is preserved, it opens a window into behaviors that would otherwise remain invisible: choices about material, purpose and adaptation. These Greek wooden implements offer that window, hinting at a more complex toolkit among early humans than stone alone could convey.
