The link between this narrow strait and the world’s food supply lies largely in fertilizer. These products help farmers maintain crop yields, enriching soil so that fields can produce the quantities of grain required by a growing global population. For farmers and agricultural markets, the consequences may unfold slowly but steadily. Fertilizer is not typically stored in vast long-term reserves. Instead, it moves through the supply chain in cycles aligned with planting seasons, often produced and shipped just months before it is needed in the fields. When shipments are delayed, farmers in importing countries—from India to Brazil and the United States—can find themselves paying higher prices or waiting longer for supplies essential to crop production.

The ripple can spread further. Fertilizer prices have already begun to rise amid the shipping disruptions, with the price of urea climbing sharply within days of the crisis. Higher fertilizer costs often translate into higher agricultural production costs, which eventually appear in the price of everyday foods.

At the same time, energy markets remain deeply intertwined with agriculture. Oil and natural gas are not only fuels for transportation but also central inputs for fertilizer production and food processing. When energy prices climb—as they often do when tensions affect Gulf shipping—farmers face rising costs for machinery, irrigation, fertilizer, and transportation. These pressures can accumulate throughout the supply chain, from the field to the grocery store shelf.

Economists note that such disruptions rarely trigger immediate shortages. Global food systems are resilient and supported by trade networks and reserves. But if shipping through the strait remains unstable for an extended period, the steady flow of agricultural inputs could tighten, gradually pushing up food prices and placing strain on food security in vulnerable regions.

For now, the connection remains mostly invisible: a shipping lane in the Gulf, a cargo of fertilizer crossing the sea, a farmer spreading nutrients across a field months later. Yet the quiet path between those moments reminds the world that modern food systems depend not only on soil and rain, but also on the fragile continuity of global trade.

In practical terms, experts say a prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could increase fertilizer costs and energy prices, both of which influence agricultural production and global food prices. Governments and markets are monitoring the situation while shipping through the region remains uncertain.
