When the Warning Is Credible: Protecting a Prime Minister

Security is a peculiar thing. Most of the time, it is invisible—the quiet work of people whose names we never learn, whose vigilance we never notice. Then a threat arrives, and suddenly the machinery of protection becomes visible: the emergency meetings, the cordoned streets, the quiet arrests that prevent something worse. In Poland this weekend, that machinery was set in motion by an email, a warning that the country’s prime minister and defense minister might be targeted for attack.

Polish police detained a man on Sunday suspected of threatening and planning an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced . The arrest took place in Wrocław, according to the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, and authorities described the threat as credible enough to warrant immediate action .

The information first reached the State Protection Service, which passed it to the police. By Sunday morning, an emergency meeting was convened at the Anti-Terrorism Center of the Internal Security Agency, bringing together representatives from the police, the protection service, and the intelligence agency . Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister coordinating special services, said the threat was being treated “deadly seriously,” and that authorities assessed a “high probability” that the threats would be carried out .

“We take this matter extremely seriously,” Dobrzyński said. He noted that threats against Poland and its officials have been increasing month by month, but that this one was different—directed at the country’s most senior leaders, concerning their safety and their lives .

Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka told Polish media that Tusk was informed early Sunday morning and continued working normally. He described the signal as “exceptionally concerning,” even by the standards of the threats officials occasionally receive . Tusk himself acknowledged the arrest on social media, thanking the police for their “fast and decisive action” .

The context of the threat is layered. It came at the end of a week in which three attacks at schools in central Poland left one person dead and many wounded, including children—a series of incidents that Prime Minister Tusk attributed to the online glorification of violence rather than organized conspiracy . Poland has also been on heightened alert over what Tusk has described as likely intensified hybrid attacks by Russia on NATO’s eastern flank, with Moscow allegedly planning strikes on countries supporting Ukraine. Russia has denied such plans .

Poland is not a country where violent crime is common, but political tension has run high, particularly since the war in Ukraine began on its eastern border. In August, police arrested a 23-year-old man accused of inciting the assassination of senior Polish politicians. In 2024, Tusk said he had received threats following the attempted assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico .

The investigation continues, and the man detained has not been publicly identified. What is known is that a threat was made, it was taken seriously, and the machinery of protection responded. In a week that had already brought violence to Polish schools, the arrest offered a reminder—quiet, perhaps, but firm—that the work of keeping public figures safe continues, largely unseen, in the spaces between headlines.
