There is a world beneath the surface of ordinary life—a world built of screens and usernames, where the vulnerable can be found and the curious can be led astray. For young people, that world is often indistinguishable from any other game, any other chat, any other place to feel understood. And that is precisely what makes it dangerous.

A 17-year-old from Lethbridge has been charged with terrorism-related offences, child sexual abuse material, and animal cruelty following an RCMP investigation into their alleged participation in the 764 network, an online group listed as a terrorist entity by the Canadian government in December 2025 .

The investigation began after Lethbridge Police Service referred the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team to a Discord user whose activity was believed to be connected to ideologically motivated violent extremism. Investigators determined the user's online behaviour was consistent with the 764 network, which recruits children through platforms popular with youth—including Discord, Roblox, Minecraft, and Telegram .

The charges are serious and numerous: participation in the activity of a terrorist group, facilitating terrorist activity, commission of an offence for a terrorist group, distribution and possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal . The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is scheduled to appear in Lethbridge court on October 14 .

The Government of Canada defines the 764 network as "a decentralized transnational network of online nihilistic violent extremists" whose core beliefs are rooted in misanthropy and nihilism. Members view sexual, psychological, and physical violence as entertainment—a way to achieve status within the group and, in their own framing, to erode social norms .

This case is not isolated. An Edmonton teenager was arrested in May 2025 in connection with the same network. A Quebec City man was arrested earlier this year. A 14-year-old Albertan faced charges in February 2024. And beyond Canada's borders, a minor linked to 764 attacked a woman with a knife in Sweden in January 2025, uploading a video of the attack to social media .

RCMP Superintendent Matt Johnson has asked parents to remain vigilant, describing a threat that no longer exists only in the physical world. "Gone are the days when risk existed only in one physical location or solely in the 'real world,'" he said. "Today, the threat extends just as dangerously into cyberspace, where online activity can rapidly spill into real-world harm" .
