When the Ocean and the Mind Collide: A Rescue Amid Struggle and Uncertainty

On a chilly New Year’s Eve afternoon along the Atlantic City shoreline, the ocean’s steady rhythm masked the tension unfolding just beyond the jetty. What began as an urgent call to help a man in distress slipping in and out of the waves soon became a fraught encounter between a rescuer and the very person he was trying to save. In the ebb and flow of saltwater and surge, a rescue operation turned into a moment of peril — a reminder that the sea may be unpredictable, but the human mind can be just as tumultuous.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 12:30 p.m. near Rhode Island Avenue Beach after reports of a man floating just beyond the protective wall of rocks. Though conscious, he was not actively swimming and appeared to be caught in the cold pull of the Atlantic. Firefighter Dominic Gitto entered the frigid waters with a rescue longboard, his aim clear: reach the man and bring him safely ashore.

But the rescue soon took a dangerous turn. According to authorities, the man — later identified as 31-year-old Christopher Treadway of Mays Landing — became aggressive and attempted to stab Gitto with a concealed screwdriver as the firefighter approached. Despite the unexpected resistance, Gitto deflected the attack and continued his efforts to secure him.

Additional rescue personnel arrived with specialized equipment, including a watercraft and rescue sled, but multiple attempts to secure Treadway were met with continued resistance. Teams eventually formed a human chain to pull him into shallower water, where he again became combative. With assistance from the Atlantic City Police Department, the man was ultimately taken into custody.

Amid the scuffle and waves, the dangers extended beyond the confrontation itself. Gitto’s dry suit began taking on water as the rescue progressed, exposing him to the ocean’s cold temperatures — reported to be around 42 degrees Fahrenheit — and he began showing signs of acute hypothermia. He was treated on shore and later released from the hospital.

Officials believe Treadway may have been experiencing a psychiatric episode at the time of the incident. After his arrest, he was admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit for evaluation. He now faces several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and resisting and obstruction.

Chief officers praised the professionalism and dedication displayed by the rescue crews. Fire Chief Scott Evans highlighted Gitto’s actions — noting that he had joined the department only months earlier — as an example of courage and commitment, even under unpredictable and hazardous conditions.

In the quiet aftermath of a dramatic ocean rescue that veered into danger, the incident stands as a sobering illustration of the risks first responders face, not just from nature’s forces but from the profound distress that can grip individuals in crisis. As the community reflects on this New Year’s Eve rescue, it also underscores the ongoing need for resources that support mental health, compassionate intervention, and the safety of both those in peril and those who answer the call.
