When the Money Runs Out and the Choices Remain

There is a particular discomfort that comes with watching a gamble come due—the moment when the choice that once seemed so clear, so lucrative, so obviously correct, arrives at its reckoning. For the players who left the established tours for the Saudi-backed promise of LIV Golf, that reckoning has arrived, and it looks nothing like the future they were sold.

Nine months after Brooks Koepka became the first LIV player to return to the PGA Tour, accepting financial penalties and forfeiting equity grants for five years, his colleagues face a far starker deadline. LIV is trying to emerge from bankruptcy without Saudi funding. BC Partners Credit has pledged $300 million to finance a restructured league, contingent on securing a "critical mass of players" by October 25 .

European tour CEO Guy Kinnings has delivered an ultimatum: players seeking European membership must leave LIV. "Players need to make a choice," Kinnings said. "We have rules and regulations which are there to protect our tour and which our members must all abide by" . The PGA Tour bans LIV players for one year from their last event, making the European tour the only viable alternative for most. For European-born players like Tyrrell Hatton and Thomas Detry, no membership means no Ryder Cup .

Jon Rahm has already made clear he is leaving LIV after reviewing the proposed terms of LIV 2.0. The prize funds are no longer $20 million. The schedule is ten tournaments, leaving weeks to play elsewhere—except that the PGA Tour and now the European tour are not options . Joaquin Niemann and Cam Smith have hinted at wanting to leave. Matt Wolff, Cameron Tringale, Marc Leishman, Byeong-hun An, and Harold Varner III have all filed legal requests to terminate their contracts .

When LIV launched in 2022, Greg Norman promised to "change the course of history" by bringing "new and open competition" to golf. Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund pumped more than $5 billion into the league, luring stars with generational wealth . Now the carrot is equity ownership in a league emerging from bankruptcy. Ted Goldthorpe of BC Partners remains optimistic: "Yes, 100%. We're going to start hiring back employees and planning for next year's events" .

But the players who chased the money are now chasing something else: a way back. The European tour has made its position clear. The PGA Tour has made its position clear. And LIV 2.0, the league that was supposed to offer freedom, is asking them to choose between a diminished version of what they left and a future that may not exist at all.

They have three weeks to decide. This time, there is no easy answer.
