When the Machinery of Death Fails, a Nation Reckons

When the Machinery of Death Fails, a Nation Reckons

There is a particular unease that settles over a nation when the machinery of death does not function as intended—when the careful protocols and medical language give way to something messier, something that forces a reckoning with what the state is actually doing in the name of justice.

Christa Pike, 50, was scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee since 1820. Instead, she was administered two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital and kept breathing . Witnesses described her lifting her head, asking about a burning sensation, and being carried from the chamber on a stretcher . She remained hospitalized, unconscious on a ventilator, as officials paused all scheduled executions in the state .

The failure was the second botched execution attempt in Tennessee in six months, and the first recorded case of someone surviving the lethal injection drug . Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent investigation and suspended executions for the remainder of the year .

The Pike case has renewed a debate that had been simmering in state capitols across the country. Some Tennessee Republican lawmakers are now openly considering whether to abandon lethal injection altogether. Senator Richard Briggs pointed to research examining executions between 1890 and 2010, which found the firing squad had zero botched cases among those studied . "We absolutely need to do something that's more humane; that's not going to have all these controversies," Briggs said

The conversation has extended beyond Nashville. In South Carolina, a firing squad execution earlier this year drew its own scrutiny after an autopsy indicated the shooters missed their target, the heart . The Pentagon announced it would conduct the first federal firing squad execution since World War II, and would livestream it—a decision that has added an unsettling dimension to an already fraught debate .

Public opinion has been shifting. Gallup found support for the death penalty fell to a five-decade low of 52 percent in late 2025, with 44 percent opposing it—the highest opposition since 1966 . Yet the number of executions rose to 47 last year, up from 25 in 2024, driven largely by a dramatic increase in Florida .

Conservative analyst John Yoo, appearing on Fox News, suggested Tennessee would need to "go back and try again," and recommended the firing squad as a method that might be more effective . The argument that a method should be chosen for its reliability rather than its humanity has unsettled some observers.

Criminologist Vincent Hurley described the Pike case as "surreal." "Even if they don't vote, Americans can't escape the surreal notion that someone has been executed by the state twice, and it's failed," he said . The language used around executions—protocol, procedure, IV lines—"sanitizes the whole thing," he added. "The language they use does dilute the fact that they're actually murdering someone" .

Tennessee's legislature is not scheduled to return until January, though some lawmakers have called for a special session. Governor Lee's investigation continues. For now, the state's execution chamber remains idle, and the questions it has raised—about method, about meaning, about what the state can and cannot do—remain unanswered.
