When the Everglades Stirs — A Florida Hunter Meets a 202‑Pound Python

n the broad, whispering marshes of southwestern Florida, where sawgrass bends in the humid breeze and birds wheel over hidden waterways, the Everglades hold centuries of stories in every burrow and bend. Sometimes those stories are quiet — a heron taking flight, a river otter slipping through rushes — and other times, they come wrapped in scales, coiled in muscle, and heavy as legend. Such was the case recently when a contracted python hunter, working deep in Big Cypress National Preserve, encountered one of the largest Burmese pythons ever seen in the state, a serpent so formidable it altered the course of an ordinary day.

The hunter, identified as Carl Jackson, had ventured into the swamp with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s support, assisting in efforts to remove invasive Burmese pythons from South Florida’s delicate ecosystem. At one turn of the trail, his eyes fell on a massive python — a female measuring nearly 17 feet long and weighing a remarkable 202 pounds. In an instant, the encounter shifted from observation to challenge.

“It was like riding a slow horse,” Jackson later said, recalling how the snake lunged and wrapped itself around his leg, pulling him along the red clay beneath the canopy. It was an instinctive struggle, where human determination met the taut power of reptile muscle. By his side were his wife and children, rushing to assist their kin in the humid hush of the swamp. Together they wrestled the python, its girth wide and its strength unmistakable, until they finally subdued it.

This capture places the python among the heaviest ever recorded in Florida’s ongoing battles against this invasive species, a battle that began decades ago when released or escaped pets found fertile ground in the Everglades. Only one larger specimen, tipped at 215 pounds, has been documented in the state’s history.

Yet this story holds more than weight and dimension. Wildlife officials noted that the python was carrying roughly 200 eggs, a bleak testament to the reproductive capacity that has made the species so destructive to native mammals and birds. The destruction of those eggs — now prevented from ever hatching — represents a small but meaningful victory in the broader effort to protect Florida’s fragile wild places.

Beyond triumphant numbers and records, there is a quiet, earnest sense of stewardship in this work: people venturing into wild places not as conquerors, but as caretakers. The Everglades, with its whispered waterways and towering reeds, invites both reverence and vigilance. And on a day when a python’s heft made headlines, it reminded those who watch and wander that nature’s stories — majestic, daunting, unpredictable — still unfold in the quiet rustle of grass and the echo of distant wings.
