When the Calendar Yields: A June Return to One of New Zealand’s Deepest Legal Wounds

There are mornings in Auckland when the air feels suspended between sea and skyline, when even the courthouse steps seem to wait before receiving the day’s first footsteps. Inside the stately chambers of the High Court at Auckland, time often moves with deliberate restraint. This week, it slowed again.

A trial set to examine allegations tied to one of New Zealand’s most enduring miscarriages of justice has been rescheduled. Two men — whose identities remain suppressed — face charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to the wrongful conviction of Alan Hall. Proceedings had been scheduled to begin, but the court was told one defendant was medically unfit to stand trial. A new start date has now been set for June 15.

The charges stem from events surrounding the 1985 conviction of Hall for the murder of Arthur Easton. Hall maintained his innocence for decades. In 2022, the Supreme Court of New Zealand quashed his conviction, ruling that a substantial miscarriage of justice had occurred. Hall had spent 19 years in prison before his release and was later awarded compensation from the Crown.

The forthcoming trial is not about the murder itself, which remains officially unsolved, but about whether evidence was improperly handled or withheld during the original investigation and prosecution. Both remaining defendants have pleaded not guilty. A third man originally charged in the case died last year.

For Hall, now in his sixties, the legal road has stretched across nearly half a lifetime. For the family of Arthur Easton, the absence of resolution remains a quiet, persistent weight. And for the courts, the case stands as a reminder that justice, though structured in calendars and timetables, often unfolds in long arcs rather than swift lines.

When the trial reconvenes in mid-winter, it will carry not only legal arguments but decades of consequence — for institutions, for families, and for a country still reckoning with how truth can falter, and how carefully it must be restored.
